Nature’s Chevron: How Grain Direction Defines Our Leaf and Feather Wooden Earrings
Nature has an incredible way of repeating its best patterns. Look closely at a leaf resting on a branch and a feather found along a forest trail, and you’ll notice a shared geometry: both feature a strong central line with delicate lines branching outward to both sides.
At Citadel Atelier, we translate these organic patterns into handcrafted wooden jewelry using natural wood veneers. While our leaf-inspired and feather-inspired drop earrings share a similar silhouette, they tell completely different visual stories.
The secret lies in a precise woodworking detail: the direction and orientation of the wood grain chevrons.
The Resemblances: Shared Geometry of the Forest
At a glance, leaves and feathers feel like natural sister motifs:
Symmetrical Central Axis: Both styles feature a distinct central line, a stem or quill, that anchors the piece and divides the natural pattern symmetrically.

The Difference: Ascending vs. Descending Chevrons
The real magic happens in how we orient the wood grain relative to that central axis. By alternating between an ascending chevron and a descending chevron, we completely change the energy, movement, and optical flow of each piece.
1. Leaf Earrings: The Ascending Chevron
For our leaf design, the wood grain is set in an ascending chevron pattern ( V ), pointing down toward the central stem and sweeping upward and outward toward the edges.
The Visual Effect: This upward movement mirrors the natural vein structure (venation) of a living leaf. It draws the viewer's eye outward and upward, creating a sense of growth, vitality, and expansion.
How Light Plays: Light catches the upward angle in a way that feels grounded and full, highlighting the leaf's organic width and vitality.
2. Feather Earrings: The Descending Chevron
For our feather design, we reverse the orientation, setting the wood grain in a descending chevron pattern ( ∧ ), anchoring high at the spine and slanting gracefully downward toward the outer tips.
The Visual Effect: This downward angle mimics the natural barbs of a bird’s feather as they sweep back along the quill. It creates a sleek, aerodynamic silhouette that emphasizes lightness, fluidity, and downward flow.
How Light Plays: Light glides down the length of the descending chevron, reinforcing the illusion of soft, weightless movement, even in solid wood.
